The 2023 City of Lone Tree Commissioner’s Choice Exhibition brings together two different art forms to explore the possibility of creation through partnership. Titled Women Artists and Poets: A Collaboration, this exhibition features the work of 14 remarkable women artists and 14 talented women poets coming together to amplify each other’s work in new and exciting ways.
Curated by Colorado artist Carlene Frances, this exhibition functions as an artistic experiment – artists and poets are paired together randomly, through the drawing of names. Then, the poets are given the opportunity to visit the artist’s studio and hear about their creative process. Finally, the poet selects a painting that the artist is going to display and uses the visual elements as inspiration for a new poem.
This exhibition, hosted at the Lone Tree Arts Center, marks the sixth time that Frances has curated an exhibition using this format. Kathleen Willard, a participating poet described the exhibition by saying “magic happens when there is cross pollination between the arts.” She also added that “A new dialogue and new possibilities open and lead to the creation of new work.”
By combining words with images, the viewer is taken on a journey that elevates the experience of viewing works of art. Ranging from abstract work to photographs and textiles, this exhibition covers the range of artistic expression and, by pairing original poetry, creates an altogether unique event.
